Rich Sega Honored at Industry Awards Event
December 10, 2024
Rich received the “Outstanding Individual Contribution to the Asset Management Industry Award” in recognition of his five decades of accomplishments. The award ceremony was the concluding activity of a one-day conference focused on best practices for insurance company investment professionals organized by Clear Path Analysis, a producer of investment analysis and events for institutional investors.
Noel Hilllman, CEO of Clear Path Analysis, introduced Rich thusly:
"Our special award is given to a person voted for not just by the judges but by their wider industry peers following a call for nominations we sent out to the Insurance Investor community of insurance asset management professionals. There were no restrictions on who could be nominated making this a truly industry wide selection. Though there were 23 people put forward, our winner received the most votes, with special comments from their industry peers.
This makes the award particularly special, as it doesn’t recognize based on an entry but based on who peers of the recipient deeply respect and feel deserves special mention. Though this award is not a lifetime achievement award, it does recognize a lifetime of making a meaningful impact on those around them.
Our recipient’s career in insurance asset management goes back 50 years, starting as an investment actuary for Travelers Insurance in 1974. This was the year median household income in the United States was $11,000 and U.S. home prices averaged $36,000. Richard Nixon stepped down that year following the Watergate scandal and the first public use of the Internet was still 20 years away.
Through the late 80s to mid-90s our recipient steadily worked up through the ranks of managing investable capital eventually starting their own third-party asset manager, a spin-out from a large U.S. insurer.
In 2000, our recipient’s firm was acquired, continuing to work for that acquiring firm to this day, and is considered one of the most respected voices on economic and market views, not just in insurance asset management but the institutional investment industry more broadly.
In answering the question, 'what makes the recipient stand out?', we received comments such as:
‘His wisdom, wit, and warmth, has made for an excellent teacher and mentor for many investment and actuarial professionals throughout their career.’
‘The knowledge brought to the role isn’t just valued but revered,’ and;
‘The global economic and investment outlook offered, following 50 years of market experience, provides clarity to others in a world of uncertainty.’
It gives me great pleasure to announce the 2024 recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to Industry to Richard Sega, Global Chief Investment Strategist for Conning"
Congratulations to Rich, very well deserved.”
